Kenya has secured a major diplomatic and security milestone with the election of Mohamed Amin, Director of Criminal Investigations, to the INTERPOL Executive Committee as Africa’s Delegate.

The election took place on November 27, 2025 during the 93rd INTERPOL General Assembly in Marrakech, Morocco.

Amin’s victory places Kenya at the centre of continental and global policing policy, marking one of the country’s highest achievements within the international law enforcement community.

He will serve a three-year term, representing Africa alongside Tunisia’s Issam Fetoui.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja formally presented Amin’s candidature to INTERPOL Member States, signalling institutional unity and Kenya’s determination to take on a greater global policing role.

Amin expressed gratitude to President William Ruto for nominating him, saying the honour extends to the entire nation.

In his acceptance address, Amin thanked Member States for their support.

“I am deeply honoured to take on this responsibility as Delegate for Africa to the INTERPOL Executive Committee. Your confidence in my candidacy reflects Kenya’s commitment to international policing and the importance of partnership across our regions,” he said.

He pledged to advocate for an inclusive and context-responsive INTERPOL, prioritising vulnerable communities.

“I will continue to advocate for the tools, capacities, and cooperation needed to dismantle criminal networks and defend the rights and lives of those who depend on us the most,” he added.

With more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement, Amin has played a central role in strengthening Kenya’s engagement with INTERPOL systems and enhancing partnerships with AFRIPOL, EAPCCO and other international agencies.

His agenda on the Executive Committee will focus on amplifying Africa’s voice, advancing technology-driven policing, improving capacity building and joint operations, and intensifying action against human trafficking and child exploitation.

The Assembly also elected new global leadership where France’s Lucas Philippe will serve a four-year term as INTERPOL President, while China’s Wang Yong was selected as Vice-President for Asia for a three-year mandate.

Japan’s Kazumi Ogasawara was elected Delegate for Asia, and Italy’s Stefano Carvelli as Delegate for Europe.

Amin’s election is widely viewed as a vote of confidence in Kenya’s leadership on regional and international security matters.

It reinforces the country’s role in promoting coordinated responses to transnational crime, including cybercrime, terrorism, trafficking networks, financial crimes, and offences targeting vulnerable groups.
